Content Description

The collection consists of various materials attributed to Margaret (Ball) Hanrahan. The items include two autograph books and two restaurant licenses. One autograph book lists names and notes from Castlewood (S.D.) and dates to the 1890s, listing various acquaintances in Castlewood. The second autograph book includes names from Rapid City (S.D.) and dates to the late 1940s and early 1950s, it lists acquaintances but also makes references to those who stayed in the Hanrahan apartments. The two restaurant licenses from the South Dakota Department of Agriculture granted Margaret permission to operate a restaurant at 615 5th Street in Rapid City and date to April 17, 1934 and November 19, 1935. Through a census record search, it is believed that Margaret Ball was born in South Dakota around 1885 to Nelson and Sarah Ball of Hamlin County. A 1932 city directory of Rapid City lists Margaret as being married to a deputy sheriff named William Hanrahan and they lived at 329 West Boulevard in Rapid City. The directory also lists a Hanrahan’s Boarding House at 615 5th street, the location of the restaurant license.
