Content Description
The collection consists of numerous index cards of historical research materials created by author Harold Schuler. The cards were used as part of Schuler’s book Pierre Since 1910 published in 1998. The index cards mainly include historical notes from newspapers and secondary sources on Pierre’s history. The topics range from larger aspects of the city’s history to smaller anecdotes and stories. Some of the larger themes for Pierre include Schools, Businesses, State Government, South Dakota State Capitol, Oahe Dam, Airport, Roads, Wars, Entertainment, Visitors and Buildings. Schuler wrote numerous books and articles on South Dakota history, especially on the history of Pierre and the surrounding area. He also served as a Board of Trustee for the South Dakota State Historical Society. The collection also includes three maps: two of the Pierre area dating from 1892 (copy) and 1996 and one map (copy) from Hughes, Sully and Hyde Counties dating to the 1890s. All maps include either notes or drawings associated with the author’s research. The collection is an accretion to previous research materials donated by Schuler including: H89-025, H89-026, H89-027, H90-032, H90-066, H90-067, H92-003, H93-053, H95-010, H96-046, H97-039, H98-061, H2001-048 and H2004-003.
