Content Description

The collection consists of letters sent by Mae (Youngberg) Schonbrod. Mae was born in South Dakota in 1902 to Albert and Myrtle Youngberg. The family lived in Fairview Township, Sully County. Mae married Walter Schonbrod in August 1923 and they lived in Eureka (S.D.). In 1936, the family moved to Oregon. The letters in the collection were written by Mae and mailed to her older sister Mildred. The letters to her sister date from 1921 to 1964 and comprise the bulk of the collection. The letters from Eureka date from 1921 to 1936, the letters written afterwards are from Oregon. Some years have more letters than others. The letters generally talk about family and local events. The Great Depression is covered in some of the letters as is World War II. The collection also includes Mae’s letters written to her mother Myrtle, Myrtle’s funeral book and sympathy cards, random envelopes from the Pierre and Onida area addressed to Albert Youngberg, a teacher’s remembrance book given to Mae in 1909 and other miscellaneous envelopes and postcards. Items not kept by the State Archives were returned to the donor.
