Content Description

The collection consists of three journals written by Mabel (Hardie) LaBay from 1909 to 1936. Mabel Hardie was born December 18, 1884 to Robert and Jeanie (Lloyd) Hardie at Mellette. She attended school in Mellette and went to college at Madison Normal School (Madison, S.D.). On September 19, 1906 she married William LaBay. They spent their early married life near Mellette and moved to the Brentford area in 1909. The LaBay’s had six children: Hugh, Jeanie, Ruth, Esther, Robert and Grace. Mabel died May 30, 1945 in Aberdeen. The first journal dates from 1909 to 1919, the second from 1919 to 1929 and the third from 1929 to 1936. The journal entries mainly concern Mabel’s children, family and acquaintances, life on their farm and local community events. The journal entries follow the children to their adult lives. A postcard photo of all six children, when they were younger, is in the front of the journal. The journals do not include daily entries, but average about an entry per month, the time between writings various throughout the journals. The entries from the 1930s refer to the Great Depression. Mabel’s daughter Grace added an addendum at the end of the last journal, written in January 1967. It adds the final chapter in Mabel and William’s lives as well as Graces reminiscences of the journals and the family’s history.
