Charles Coleman Collection—World War I Correspondence

The collection consists mainly of correspondence sent by Charles Coleman to his wife Leah Coleman during World War I. The collection also includes other correspondence sent to Leah. Charles Harry Coleman was born November 8, 1895 at Ft. Niobrara, Nebraska. His parents were James and Catherine Coleman. The family moved to Sully County, South Dakota the following year. Charles served with Company A, 4th South Dakota Infantry during World War I. He married Leah [Faye] Borden of Onida (S.D.) on June 29, 1918. The lived for a time in Clifton (S.D.) before moving to Pierre in 1925. Along with the correspondence, the collection includes various greeting cards, a roster list for Company A, 4th South Dakota Infantry, a play from the playbill for Bijou Theater (Pierre, S.D.), a postcard view of Blunt (S.D.), and a Mexican Border Service card/poem. The items have sustained considerable water damage and may require additional conservation work.
