Content Description

The collection consists of photographs and a few postcards of various Black Hills scenes from the 1940s-1950s. The photos were taken by Edward M. and Edward R. Hexom, grandfather and uncle of the donor. The Hexom family was from Madison (S.D.) and would occasionally take fishing trips out to the Black Hills, staying at cabins along Rapid Creek. Photographs in the collection include various tourist stops such as Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Pigtail bridges, Custer (S.D.), Custer State Park (S.D.)—Game Lodge, Crazy Horse Monument, Badlands, Dinosaur Park (Rapid City, S.D.), Sylvan Lake (S.D.), Hill City Zoo (Hill City, S.D.), Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road, Bridal Veil Falls (S.D.), Gordon Stockade, Annie Tallent Monument (Custer, S.D.), American Buffalo/Bison and Big Horn Sheep. Various signage at the stops is also included.
