Content Description

The collection consists of brochures, manuals, booklets and photographs of various military related locations throughout South Dakota. The heart of the collection is photographs, dating from the late 1940s to early 1950s, of military forts and ghost towns in South Dakota. Also include are photographs of the grounds at Fort Meade from 2001, two manuals owned by Private James McAdam who served at Fort Meade titled Infantry Drill Regulations, 1911 and Soldier’s Hand Book USA, 1908; postcards of Fort Meade, two manuals owned by Private Joseph Hauser who served at Fort Meade titled Manual of Guard Duty, 1908 and Soldier’s Hand Book USA, 1908 and a booklet titled “Old Post Cemetery” for Fort Meade. The collection also includes Wounded Knee Massacre research and photographs including a report titled, “Report on Historical Investigation of Wounded Knee Battlefield Ste, Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota” compiled by the National Park Service on October 3, 1952. Finally, the donation includes information on specific military locations such as Fort Sully, Fort Sisseton, Fort Randall, Camp Roosevelt (Watertown, S.D.) and Sioux Falls Army Airfield (Sioux Falls, S.D.). The items include booklets and photographs. Also featured is the Infantry Drill Regulations, United States Army manual from 1891 which belonged to Earl Bushnell of Brookings (S.D.).
