The collection consists of twelve small (2¾ x 3½) black and white images of scenes from the Black Hills Passion Play near Spearfish (S.D.). A photo studio simply named, “Black Hills Studios” took the photographs. The play featured Josef Meier as Jesus with performances running every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday from June to early September. The entire ensemble consisted of 250 players. The Passion Play had been performed in the Black Hills since 1939. The images date to the 1960s. The collection also includes a number of random South Dakota postcards dating from the 1940s to 1960s.
