Content Description

The collection consists of various photograph and postcards dating from roughly the 1880s to 1910s. The collection includes three 8x10 images mounted on cardstock taken by Hot Springs photographer W. R. Cross. The image titles include, “Hanging Rock and Fairy Window, Sylvan Lake, S.D.” “Horseshoe Bend, Black Hills & Fort Pierre Railway in Elk Creek Canyon, from Crystal Cave” and “Cleopatras Needle, Crystal Cave, S.D.” Other images in the collection include a bird’s eye view of the grounds for a Sundance, with teepees encircling the site, on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation ca. 1895, the brick buildings on the Central Block of Pierre street in Pierre ca. 1880s, a cabinet card taken by Pierre photographer R. L. Kelly of the Fort Sully II parade grounds from the 1890s, a stereoview of store buildings along Pierre street published by Myron B. Odell in 1881, a postcard of a group of Native American tents along the Missouri River near Pierre, a postcard view of Central Block on Pierre street ca. 1910s, a postcard of the Central Block on Pierre street ca. 1900s and a photograph of Riverside Cemetery in Pierre showing older wooden tombstones taken in August of 1934. A Pierre and Fort Pierre city telephone directory from 1949 was added to the telephone directory collection.
