The collection consists of United States Land Office correspondence, other letters and brief diary entries concerning Ella F. Lawrence and the Lawrence family who settled in Milford Township, Beadle County in 1882. The Land Office correspondence dates to the 1880s and includes letters to Wells, Ella and Bert. The letters date to the family’s time in Dakota Territory and are addressed or postmarked to Cavour (D.T.). The collection also contains items pertaining to Ella and the family before their move to Dakota Territory including letters, news clippings, a teaching certificate and a diary from 1879. Ella Frances Lawrence born in New York on June 9, 1851 to Wells E. and Laura (Terry) Lawrence. The family moved to the Montmorency Township area of Illinois in 1855. The Lawrence children included Ella, Bert, Grace, Minnie and James. In the early spring of 1882, the Lawrence family moved to Beadle County, Milford Township. The family built a homestead on section 27 of the township. Ella taught school for 40 years in Illinois, New York and South Dakota having first taught school in 1869 at the age of 18.
