Ancient and Honorable Order of Squirrels—Membership Cards, 1946
Content Description
The collection consists of two membership cards, dated September 2, 1946, for Mr. and Mrs. William Flugum certifying them as members of the Ancient and Honorable Order of the Squirrels. The honor notes that they climbed to the Harney Peak Lookout Station at Harney National Forest. Presumably, the card was given to anyone who climbed to the lookout station. The card was signed by lookout man Byron Hazeltine, an employee of the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service. The front of the card features a drawing of the Harney Peak Lookout Station. The back of the card notes, “The hardest nut the U.S. Forest Service and the State Conservation Departments have to crack is the problem of man-caused forest fires.” The card was used to bring awareness to the threat of forest fires in the Harney National Forest.
