Selby (S.D.)—Train Wreck negatives, August 1951
The collection consists of six (4x6) negatives of the aftermath of a train (number 329) accident which occurred near Selby (S.D.) on the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad line on August 16, 1951. An extended boom from a wrecker train struck a highway overpass. The accident happened around 2:00 p.m. The accident destroyed the highway bridge. Two train workers Oris Olson (fireman) and Theodore Strome (engineer) leapt from the cab moments before impact. The images show the tipped over train engine, debris from the highway bridge and various workers and onlookers at the scene. The donor’s mother, who worked at the Mobridge Tribune, saved the images. It is believed they originated from the Selby Star News.
