Content Description
The collection consists of various items concerning the life of Arlene (Scott) Moore from the 1930s and 1940s. Arlene Scott was born August 13, 1924 to Clyde and Edith (Wise) Scott at their home south of Artesian (S.D.). Arlene attended grade school in Diana and Wise townships and attended high school at Artesian, graduating in 1942. In the fall and winter of 1942/1943, she worked at the P.X. Café at the Rapid City Army Air Base (Rapid City, S.D.). Arlene later became a nursing student at the Methodist Hospital in Mitchell (S.D.) in September of 1943 and graduated with a Registered Nursing degree in 1946. The items in the collection include various materials including: a five year diary, with daily entries, kept by Arlene from 1942 to 1947, country grade school items including report cards, a common school diploma and eight grade graduation materials, a small scrapbook of news clippings during Arlene’s freshman year of high school concerning various school news, High School items include report cards, an autograph book, news clippings, an Artesian High School diploma, the class poem from 1942, materials concerning a high school play and carnival, two basketball tournament programs and a handwritten note of both Artesian boys and girls basketball games. Also included are World War II related materials such as letters, stamps, a ration book and other correspondence, nursing related materials, and two photographs. One of Arlene and Luella Scott as children taken at the H. H. Lubeck Studio (Howard, S.D.) and a photograph of airmen from the Rapid City Army Airbase taken in 1942/1943. Additional items concerning the Rapid City Army Airbase were transferred to the museum.
