Content Description

The collection consists of a panoramic photo of the Tri-State Roundup in Belle Fourche (S.D.) featuring President and Mrs. Coolidge in July 1927, postcards of the Black Hills Passion Play from the 1960s and one photo of President Calvin and Mrs. Coolidge taken at Ardmore (S.D.) in 1927. The 8x44 inch panoramic photograph features President Calvin and Mrs. Grace Coolidge at center on the rodeo grounds. On the grounds with them are various rodeo performers and cowboys (showing pennants from various states) and the rodeo fans and grandstand in the background. The photograph was taken by the O’Neill Photo Company of O’Neill (NE). Lawrence Slider is identified as the bald man to the immediate right of President Coolidge. The lone 3x4 inch photograph of President and Mrs. Coolidge was taken at Ardmore (S.D) on July 16, 1927 by Nellie Slider. The images were taken in 1927 during President Coolidge’s summer visit to South Dakota. In addition, there are twenty color postcard images of various scenes from the Black Hills Passion Play. Josef Meier, who portrayed Jesus Christ, is featured in several of the postcards. The performances were held near Spearfish (S.D.), with these images dating to the 1960s.
