Content Description

The collection mainly consists of various black and white images taken at dam locations along the Missouri River in South Dakota, specifically Fort Randall Dam, Gavin’s Point Dam, Big Bend Dam and Oahe Dam. Some of the images show the dams under construction while others show the completed dams with the images dating form the 1950s to 1960s. Most of the images are dated. Other topics included in the collection, also dated to the 1950s and 1960s, are scenes form the Black Hills and Badlands as well as the South Dakota State Capitol, Capitol Lake and the Soldiers and Sailors Building in Pierre (S.D.). Also shown are fishing scenes along the dams, Fort Randall Chapel, the 1880 Train (Hill City, S.D.), Mount Rushmore National Memorial (S.D.), Pactola Lake (S.D.), Spearfish Canyon and the Wheeler Bridge (Wheeler, S.D.). Also included is a photo taken at Medicine Lake from the 1920s showing numerous automobiles as well as swimmers enjoying the lake.
