Content Description

The collection consists of one 5x12 panoramic image taken in Pierre (S.D.) on May 24, 1919. The image shows a train crossing the patriotically decorated Chicago and Northwestern railroad viaduct over Pierre Street. A caption for the image reads, “The arrival of the train with the boys of Bat. C. 147 F.A. [Battalion C, 147th Field Artillery] from France, May 24, 1919. A more welcome train never arrived in Pierre SD USA.” People are standing and watching the train as soldiers are visibly seen leaning out the train car windows. The soldiers made their way back to Pierre after the conclusion of the First World War. The image was taken by the O.S. Leeland—Photo Studio (Pierre, S.D.). A vertical fold crease is visible in the center of the image. The photo was housed in a Mylar sheet for additional preservation.
