The collection consists of one photocopied manuscript titled, “The History of Mike and Anna Schiferl.” The manuscript starts with the early history of the Schiferl and Moser families in Nebraska. Mike Schiferl and Anna Moser were married on November 24, 1903 in Randolph (NE). In June 1906 Mike traveled to Lyman County, South Dakota which was recently opened for homesteading. The family filed a claim fourteen miles northwest of Vivian (S.D.). Mike began work on the homestead in October 1907, the family would join him in November. In 1908, the family sold the homestead and moved to land west of Presho (S.D.). In the summer of 1921, the family moved to Academy (S.D.) in Charles Mix County. Various trips and events for Vivian and Presho are included in the manuscript. Also included are names of the surrounding neighbors and acquaintances they associated with during their time in Lyman County. The manuscript offers detailed descriptions of homestead life such as home life, neighbors, children, prairie fires, weather, railroads, schools, animals, agriculture, dances, wells, clubs, the Fourth of July, etc. The manuscript was written by Anna on April 19, 1970.
