The collection consists of various photographs and cabinet cards featuring members of the McDonald family from Highmore (S.D.) Hyde County. Duncan and Ann (Bain) McDonald brought their family to Hyde County in 1884, settling southwest of Highmore. They and most of their 11 children lived out their lives in Hyde County. Their son Harve McDonald and his wife Amy (Foote) are also represented within the photograph collections. The photographs and cabinet cards include various family and children scenes and are generally well identified. Other topics within the collection include an automobile, Scotty Philip’s Ranch of buffalo near Fort Pierre (S.D.), Charlie Eagle Shield, Indians of North America—photographs, the Hyde County Courthouse (Highmore, S.D.) dedication, and a winter scene showing a rotary snowplow. The collection also includes obituaries of family members, history on the McDonald family in Hyde County and transcripts of two family letters. Oversized photos of Harvey and Amy McDonald and of the Scotty Philip buffalo herd were placed in box 3578A. Photographers identified in the collection include O.C. Kippenbrock—Photo Studio (Highmore, S.D.), George C. Stoner—Photo Studio (Highmore, S.D.) and Thomas Scott Mayberry—Photo Studio (Miller, S.D.).
