Content Description

The collection consists of photographs of patients and staff at the South Dakota State Sanitarium for Tuberculosis in Sanator (S.D.) dating from 1952 to 1955. Ethel Brownwolf was a patient at the sanitarium. The photographs, some of which are identified, include both patients and hospital staff. Images also feature the sanitarium buildings, grounds and patient rooms. There are also photographs of doctors W. L. Meyers and C. L. Chu. There is also a random photo of Bader Clark in the collection. The collection also contains a publication titled, “San-Kota” from Sanator dated November 1961. According to the newsletter, “San-Kota” was published by and in the interest of the patients at the State Sanitarium at Sanator. The State Archives has microfilmed issues of “San-Kota” dating from the late 1930s to early 1960s. There are also three postcards, one aerial view of the sanitarium at Sanator (S.D.) taken by the Rise Studio of Rapid City (S.D.) and two of Custer (S.D.) main street from the 1950s taken by Canedy’s Camera Shop of Sioux Falls (S.D.).
