Content Description

The collection consists of twenty-nine topographical maps and nine folios for various locations in South Dakota published by the Department of Interior, United States Geological Survey. The topographical areas in this collection are primarily in the Black Hills and James River Valley regions of South Dakota. The regions were surveyed in the 1890s and the maps printed in the 1900s. The nine folios (18 ½ x 21 ¾) include descriptive text, a topographic map, areal geology map and an artesian water map. Regions include Belle Fourche, De Smet, Edgemont, Elk Point, Huron, Oelrichs, Olivet, Mitchell and Parker. The folios are in MD 331. The twenty-nine topographical maps (16 ¾ x 20) includes regions in the Black Hills and James River Valley area. The topographical maps are in alphabetical order. Also included are two index maps for the topographical maps. The topographical maps are in MD 332. The maps were transferred to the South Dakota State Archives from the Postal History Foundation (Tucson, AZ). A folio of Alexandria was also included with the transfer, but a copy exists in the State Archives.
