The collection consists of one postcard labeled as the “National Sanitarium, Hot Springs, S.D.” The postcard correspondence is dated January 14, 1910. The postcard is a bird’s eye view which shows Battle Mountain Sanitarium as well as other buildings in Hot Springs. The postcard was published by the Bloom Bros. Importers of Minneapolis (MN). Battle Mountain Sanitarium, located in Hot Springs (S.D.) opened in 1907, offering Union Veterans of the Civil War a complete array of services including plunge baths and an amusement hall. The sanitarium was part of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. It was the first and only sanitarium built solely as a short-term sanitarium for veterans with lung or respiratory problems, not as a long-term home.
