Content Description

The collection consists of six postcards of various homestead scenes in Meade County of Frank and Katie (Stramer) Becker and family. Frank and Katie, and Katie’s mother Bertha Stramer, settled in Meade County, roughly fifty miles northeast of Sturgis (S.D.) from late 1909 to 1914. According to General Land Office Records, Frank Becker homesteaded in the northwest quarter of section 33, Township 10 North, Range 11 East which was located north of Fairpoint (S.D.). His mother in law, Bertha Stramer filed on the southeast quarter of section 31. The postcards, postmarked from Fairpoint (S.D.), were addressed to a Grace Smith of Adrian (MN). All except one of the postcards are dated to 1910. Three were written by Katie Becker, two from Stramer family members with one postcard undated. The real-photo postcard views include one postcard showing the post office and hotel in Fairpoint (S.D.), two images of Bertha Stamer’s home, one photo of Frank and Katie’s home, another postcard of a smaller homestead shack with a number of home items (bed materials, a dresser, head and base boards, blankets and other items) outside the shack and the final postcard which reads “Hope to See You Thursday” and a clock showing the meeting time. Written transcripts of the postcard correspondence are included with the collection.
