Content Description

The collection consists of one sample ballot (7 ½ x 22 inches) for Hamlin County from the election held on November 5, 1940. Offices up for election included the President of the United States, First District Representative in Congress, a full slate of South Dakota State Officials including Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, etc., State Legislators for Hamlin County and various Hamlin County Officials. Notable names on the ballot include Franklin Roosevelt, Wendell Willkie, Karl Mundt and Harlan Bushfield. The ballot also lists the Presidential Electors (4) for each party. Vote amounts were also written on the ballot. Due to the small number tallied on the ballot the numbers probably represented a rural precinct or small town. As written, the total votes cast were 481 with Wendell Willkie receiving 298 votes and Franklin Roosevelt receiving 183 votes. The ballot was placed in a Mylar sleeve to help with preservation. Other random items donated include a Thanksgiving postcard and General Greeting postcard from 1912 and a twenty-fifth wedding anniversary invitation for John C and Ruth (Brown) Campbell of Bryant (S.D.) held on February 11, 1907. The couple were married in Rochester (MN) in 1882. A 1913 Calendar booklet for the C. L. VanKoughnet & Company drug store in Sturgis (S.D.) and a letter concerning stamps was added to appropriate Vertical File collections.
