Content Description

The collection consists of twenty-one postcards, both real photo and color tinted linen, of various locations throughout South Dakota. The postcards mainly date to the 1920s, with one image dating to the 1980s. The images in the collection include two images of a saw mill fire at Rapid City dated January 14, 1914 taken by the Rise Studio (Rapid City, S.D.), a Badlands scene from 1911, “Cupola Rocks and Walls” in the Badlands, “The Dells” in the Black Hills, the Needle’s Eye, the Ellison Hoist (Lead, S.D.), flashlight photographs of miners at Homestake mine taken in 1909 by W. B. Perkins, Jr., “Old Abe Hoist” at Homestake Mine, buildings on the South Dakota State School of Mines campus in Rapid City, the Anna D. Tallent monument, a random scene of a rock wall in the Black Hills, looking through a gorge near Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park, the Forest Ranger Station on Harney Peak, weighing Gold Bricks at Homestake Mine, a view the Stamp Mills at Homestake Mine, the panoramic aerial views of Lead (S.D.) and a postcard of the Homestake Mine by Moonlight. The image from the 1980s is of a small girl riding a tortoise at Reptile Gardens (Rapid City, S.D.).
