Content Description
The collection consists of four (8x10 inch) photographs taken of President John F. Kennedy during his visit to Oahe Dam near Pierre (S.D.) on August 17, 1962. Image highlights include President Kennedy and various Corps of Engineers managers viewing dam schematics with a number of press members in the background, an image of Kennedy at the Pierre Municipal Airport amongst a crowd of people, Kennedy’s visit with Jamie Damon (a local girl who wrote a letter asking the President to come see the dam) which also features George McGovern, and a photograph at the airport of Kennedy and South Dakota Governor Archie Gubbrud in the President’s 1961 Lincoln Continental limousine. A reprint photograph of Kennedy and McGovern at a separate event is also included. One of the images is marked with a “U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers” stamp. The others are unidentified. The photographs were collected by longtime Sioux Falls Argus Leader political reporter Dave Kranz.
