Content Description

The collection consists of documents, pictures, and family history books (all in digital format) for the Schmierer, Meisenholder and Becker families of South Dakota, their history and descendants. The photos, documents and family histories were researched, compiled, and written by Thomas J. Schmierer. The families had their origins in Germany before immigrating to the United States, coming to Dakota Territory by the 1880s. The writeups include historical context of Europe in the 1800s, family vital record information, photographs, genealogy data and background on family members. Some of the research dates the families back to the 1600s. The digital files comprise of writeups on various family members and topics saved as .pdf files. Other items include information on the G. Meisenholder Department Store in Vermillion (S.D.), family reunion information, University of South Dakota yearbooks ranging in date from the 1900s to 1940s as well as Thomas Schmierer’s experiences and photographs from World War II. The collection includes an undated audio file of the University of South Dakota, Coyote Marching Band. The digital files were processed through the State Archives, Digital Preservation Program.
