Content Description

The collection consists of seventeen postcards of various views from the blizzard of early January 1949 in western South Dakota, mainly of Rapid City (S.D.). January of 1949 was one of the coldest and snowiest months recorded in the Black Hills region. One person died as a result of the storm in western South Dakota. The three main scenes are views of snow in downtown Rapid City, railroad and road plowing efforts, and images of animals that perished during the blizzard. The majority of the postcard views are attributed to Rushmore Photo Inc of Rapid City, with a few also taken by the Rapid City Journal.
