Content Description

The collection consists of one postcard taken within the Homestake Mine (Lead, S.D.). A caption on the postcard reads, “Flashlight photograph of the underground workings of the Homestake, the largest gold mine in the world.” Shown are the “old way” of drilling and the “new way.” In the photo, one man swings a sledgehammer while another holds a hand steel to a rock. A man at the right is using a pneumatic mining drill to bust through the rock. The postmark on the card dates to September 20, 1908. The image is copyrighted to William Bradford Perkins, Jr. of Lead (S.D.) photographer, importer and jobber. Perkins Jr. took several photographs throughout the Black Hills area, and of mining in Lead.
