Content Description

The collection consists of postcards, a postcard booklet, and miniature postcards of Black Hills scenes taken by various South Dakota photographers dating from the 1920s. Postcard images include the Custer State Park Game Lodge, Hell’s Ten Thousand Acres and Manitou Mountain and Cupola Rocks and Wall in the Badlands, views along the Needles Highway in Custer State Park, Sylvan Lake, Sylvan Lake Hotel, Wedge Rock, Bridal Veil Falls in Spearfish Canyon, the Doherty Fountain at Rapid City and a group of tourist in three touring cars on the Needles Highway. Photographers include Louis W. Canedy—Canedy’s Camera Shop (Sioux Falls, S.D.), L. B. Hollister—Importer/Jobber (Lead, S.D.), Art Lease—Photo Studio (Lead, S.D.) and Rise Studio—Photo Studio (Rapid City, S.D.). Also included is a postcard booklet titled, “Souvenir Folder of Black Hills, South Dakota, Switzerland of America” dating to 1928 as well as a miniature postcard booklet of twenty souvenir views of the Black Hills. Both are credited to L. B. Hollister and show various Black Hills scenes from the 1920s. The images were sent to the Little family of Galesburg (IL).
