Content Description

The collection consists of three sepia tone prints dating to the late 1880s and early 1890s. Two of the images are attributed to photographer John C. H. Grabill. The first image, No. 1464 titled “Woodshooting in the air,” measures 7x10 inches and is a photo of a large wood pile at the De Smet Mill in Central City (S.D.) and dates to 1888. The second Grabill image is also 7x10 inches and shows a train and two passenger railcars for the Dakota Central Railroad. The photo is No. 1892 and titled, “D.C.R.R. Grade over 400 feet to mile,” and dates to 1889. The third image does not have a photographer’s mark, other than a stamp on the back which reads, “Lead Studio, Lead, S.D.” The photo is 8x10 inches and features billowing smoke from a fire on a large lumber pile. Both firefighters and spectators are at the scene. The location and date of the fire is not known.
