Content Description

The collection consists of twenty-three letters addressed to Roy Sutherland, with a few addressed to Roy’s father Calvin Sutherland. Most of the letter’s date to 1905, when Roy was seventeen and living with his parents Calvin and Martha in southwestern Custer County, Township 6, Range 1, with their mail addressed to Dewey (S.D.). According to the 1905 South Dakota State Census, Roy was born in Nebraska and the family came to South Dakota in 1895. Both of Roy’s parents were from North Carolina. Most of the letters are from Roy’s teenage cousins, Myrtle and Cora Sutherland who also lived in Custer County with their parents F.N. and Rachel Sutherland in Township 4, Range 4. School and baseball are main topics of interest within the letters. A few letters were sent by Roy’s male acquaintances. A letter from the Bank of Edgemont (Edgemont, S.D.) is also included.
