Content Description

The collection consists of four 8x10 black and white images on 11x14 black mounts of the construction of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Bridge across the Missouri River from Pierre to Ft. Pierre. The images are dated between the months of August and November of 1906 when the temporary bridge was completed and work had begun on the first caisson. The four images are titled as follows: “First Pier RR Bridge, 1906,” “Powerhouse for the RR Bridge,” “Beginning of Party 1906,” and “Beginning of RR Bridge, 1906.” There is also an 8x10 reprint in the collection of the “Beginning of RR Bridge, 1906” image. Emil Jarl, a Swedish Immigrant, is marked as the man behind the stick holding a glass and missing a finger in the “Beginning of Party 1906,” image. The photo shows a number of men drinking beer and smoking cigars. A keg is also present.
