Harry Veit Collection
Content Description
The collection consists of two scrapbooks of railroad information compiled by Harry Veit. Harry was an engineer with the Milwaukee (Chicago, Milwaukee, & St. Paul) Railroad. He began working on the railroad in 1908. Harry and his wife Stella (Tatro) Veit lived in Mitchell, SD. They had three daughters Alice, Delores, and Esther. Both scrapbooks contain a wealth of information on railroading on the Chicago, Milwaukee, & St. Paul from 1910s to the 1950s. Some of the South Dakota cities mentioned in the scrapbooks are Canton, Chamberlain, Ethan, Mitchell, Murdo, Parker, Scotland, and Rapid City. Most of the images are train wrecks which occurred outside of town. Most of the town images are of Mitchell. Images show train wrecks, blizzards, trains, main street views, and railroad workers along the C, M, & St. Paul railroad. There are also marked images of Harry Veit in the scrapbook. Additional images show the family in Mitchell, on vacation, and on pheasant hunting trips. There are also a number of obituaries (and notices of retirement) for railroad men who worked on the Chicago, Milwaukee, & St. Paul, mostly from Mitchell.
