Content Description

The collection consists of a memoir, sketchbook, diary notebook, and family portrait of Ethel May Wright. Ethel was born in Bowdle, SD in 1896 and spent six years in Evarts, SD. The family later moved to Mobridge. The 26 page memoir was written by Ethel in her later years. The memoir includes a number of topics including: church picnics, school, Native American relations, her father Richard Wright (town Marshall) and his alcoholism, diseases, living in a sod house, and other various topics. The names of several individuals are included in the memoir. The sketchbook has a number of pencil and crayon drawings done by Ethel. The sketches portray a number of childhood scenes and various buildings. The diary notebook has a number of poems of Ethel’s and other various poets. The diary notebook also has a number of pencil and crayon drawings. A studio portrait of Ethel, her husband James Letcher, and son Howard, taken in 1919 is also included. Scans were made of the diary notebook and sketchbook, and preservation masters were generated in accordance with the Archives’ Digital Preservation Rules. The digital copies were also placed on a CD disk in box 7035B.
