Identifier: H2010-013

Content Description

The collection consists of three 8mm color films and one DVD. In the first film, Solon demonstrates, and in so doing comparing, the different agriculture techniques and equipment of horse-drawn and 1950s era farming technology. Some of the farming methods shown include fertilizing, disking, dragging, plowing, planting, mowing, harvesting, binding, and threshing. The first film is an excellent resource for showing 1950s era farming techniques and equipment and how they compare to older horse-drawn farming of previous decades. Also shown in the first film are fishing scenes along the James River. The two additional films show the Orr’s hog operations and harvesting of the family garden and orchard. The DVD offers a digital version of the films with narration. Also included is an Orr family genealogy. The chapters of the DVD are as follows: SD & Jennie’s Farm Movies, 800 Years of Orr History, and The Orr’s American Family.
