Content Description
The collection consists of photographs, news clippings, and interviews related to the life of Hazel Mahone. Hazel was an African American woman who lived in Huron, SD. Hazel was born in 1910 in Huron, SD to Jerry and Carrie Warren. She graduated from Huron high school in 1929 and attended Huron College for two years, and later enrolled in cosmetology school. Hazel was a hair dresser in Huron for 45 years. Many of the news clippings cover various details of Hazel’s early and later life. One speech is included given by Jeannette C. Lusk on January 24, 1973 in front of the Business and Professional Women who awarded Hazel as women of the year in 1973. There is also a transcript of an interview given in March and April of 2006. This collection is an accretion to H2006-086.
