Content Description

The collection consists of one typed manuscript of one hundred and forty-six pages titled: “The National Youth Administration in South Dakota,” by Everett A. Trevor, Manager of the Mitchell Master Project. There are ten chapters and an appendix to the work. Chapter titles include: “The World Youth Problem,” “South Dakota in the Great Depression,” “Formation of the National Youth Administration,” “The Student Work Programs in South Dakota,” “Educational Camps for Unemployed Women, 1934-1935,” “The Out-of-School Work Program, 1935-1936,” “The Out-of-School Work Program, 1936-1937,” “The Out-of-School Work Program, 1937-1940,” “The Defense Years, 1940-1942,” and “The War Years, 1942-1943.” Executive Order 7086, signed by President Franklin Roosevelt on June 26, 1935 created the National Youth Administration (NYA). Its purpose was to provide part-time employment to needy school, college, and graduate students, as well as youth from relief families aged 16-24. Also included are 27 black and white 8x10 and 5x7 photographs of various NYA projects in South Dakota. A list of the photos is provided.
