Content Description
The collection consists of one copy of a transcript from the diary of Javan B Irvine (1831-1904). The diary entries date from August 21, 1871 to October 26, 1871. The diary explains Irvine’s journey with the 1871 Eastern Yellowstone Surveying Expedition with engineers and surveyors of the Northern Pacific Railroad Company who attempted to find a rail route through northern Dakota Territory. The diary was transcribed by John and Linda Lubetkin between 1998 and 2003. Footnotes are supplied which offer further insight in to the transcript. The original diary is held in the collections of the South Dakota State Archives, H72-003, box 3347A.
