Content Description

The collection consists of a manuscript of information on John H. Burns (1851-1939). Burns was a prominent pioneer, author, attorney, and judge in the early history of Deadwood. The newspaper clippings on Burns were found in issues of the Black Hills Daily Times and the Black Hills Daily Pioneer from the years 1877-1897. There are also various census records in the manuscript along with city directories. Burns was also author of the book, “Memoirs of a Cow Pony,” written in 1906. Headings in the manuscript are titled: John H. Burns, John Burns Colt 45 Revolver, Marriage to Clara L. Shoudy, Family History, Samuel Burns – Civil War and Pension Records, and Deadwood, DT – History and Photos.
