Content Description

The collection consists of two collections of black and white photographs of the 1952 Fort Pierre Flood and the construction of the Whitlock Crossing Bridge. The fourteen 1952 flood images show flooded homes and roads in Fort Pierre (S.D.). There are thirty three images of the construction of the Whitlock Crossing Bridge. The Whitlock Crossing Bridge (also known as the Forest City Bridge) replaced a bridge constructed in 1925. The new bridge was 4583 feet long and 165 feet above the Missouri River bed with a 26 foot wide roadway. The images were taken in October of 1958 and show construction workers, machinery, cranes, and superstructure of the bridge.
