Content Description

The collection consists of various materials relating to Norman Bierwagen including World War II and American Legion materials. Norman entered the U.S. Navy on March 16, 1945 and was discharged on August 10, 1946. Items include a certificate from then President Harry Truman, honorable discharge certificate (photocopy), and discharge papers. American Legion materials include a certificate of membership for the American Legion, a life membership card, two newsletters from the South Dakota American Legion Band, 1971 and a roster of band members. The collection includes three photographs: one of an unidentified man, Norman, and his father Walter; a portrait image of Norman in his Navy uniform; and an image of the South Dakota American Legion band from 1971. Norman is in the second row, second from right in the image holding a trumpet. The collection also includes one panoramic image of the State Capitol from the 1920s. The photo measures 7x16-inches.
