Scope and Contents
This series contains miscellaneous papers filed in proceedings before the Lawrence County Circuit Court between 1881and 1966 and includes subpoenas, bonds, indictments, arrest warrants, bills of exception, deeds, title abstracts, orders, motions, depositions, court calendars, jury lists, transcripts, and miscellaneous court case files. Of particular note is the case file for the State of South Dakota vs. Andrew Rolando, which includes witness testimonies and crime scene photographs. Rolando was accused of murdering Arthur B. Belknap, a Catholic priest of Lead, SD, in 1921. The prominent Deadwood entrepreneur and politician Solomon “Sol” Star, who served as the Lawrence County Clerk of Courts from 1898 until his death in 1917, also appears throughout these records.
