District Court Filed Papers and Clerk of Courts Correspondence, 1875 - 1937, bulk: 1877 - 1907

This series contains miscellaneous papers filed in proceedings before the Lawrence County District Court and Clerk of Courts correspondence for the years 1875-1937. Records include subpoenas, criminal complaints, affidavits, bonds, indictments, warrants, venires, judicial rulings and jury verdicts, deeds and location certificates, orders, motions, depositions, civil case calendars, transcripts, stenographers’ shorthand notes, A.A.O.N.M.S. (Shriner) lodge event invitations and pamphlets, soldier burial expense certificates, and miscellaneous court case files. This series also contains some miscellaneous Circuit Court records. The prominent Deadwood entrepreneur and politician Solomon “Sol” Star, who served as the Lawrence County Clerk of Courts from 1898 until his death in 1917, appears throughout the series, most notably in the Clerk of Courts correspondence. Included among the Clerk of Courts correspondence are some of Sol Star’s personal letters, mostly concerning his involvement in the A.A.O.N.M.S. (Shriners) and other fraternal organizations.
