Scope and Contents

This series contains records related to the South Dakota Statehood Centennial celebrations, which took place throughout 1989. Records include a program from the dedication of the South Dakota Statehood postage stamp; programs from the Centennial Finale Weekend held on November 3rd and 4th in Pierre, SD; color photographs of the statues created by Dale Lamphere to commemorate the centennial; and eight VHS tapes containing coverage of South Dakota's Centennial Celebration held in Pierre on November 4th. All video footage was taken by South Dakota Public Broadcasting's Telecommunications Center, and includes historical segments, the centennial parade, information on other celebrations held throughout the state, speeches by famous South Dakotans and businessmen, and coverage of the Centennial Grand Ball.

  1. "Parade" - includes Governor George S. Mickelson's thoughts on the centennial, information on how South Dakota became a state, and parade coverage with commentary by Gemma Lockhart and Larry Rohrer.
  2. "Focus Segment #1" - continuing parade coverage, historical segment on Laura Ingalls Wilder, centennial happenings in other parts of the state, Joe Robbie's homecoming, honoring centennial businesses, and information on Centennial Education with Alice Kundert.
  3. "Capitol Dedication" - covers centennial celebrations in Doland and Storla, the Centennial Fair in Huron, and the rededication of the Capitol building.
  4. "Focus Segment #2" - includes segments featuring Pat O'Brien, the Missouri River, Peter Norbeck, historical perceptions of South Dakota settlers, the Badlands, the history of arts and religion in early South Dakota, and centennial celebrations across the state.
  5. "Capitol Ball" - includes coverage of the centennial wagon trains, Rosebud Sioux celebrations, the American Legion flotilla from Pierre to Mobridge, the Centennial State Fair, historical segments on Badlands National Park and Laura Ingalls Wilder, and centennial celebrations in Aberdeen and Selby.
  6. "Capitol Ball and Grand March" - includes coverage of centennial celebrations across the state, the Capitol Ball held at the State Capitol, and the Centennial Grand Ball held at the Ramkota River Center in Pierre. Also contains information on Capitol restoration efforts, the First Ladies' Gowns collection on display at the Capitol, Tom Roberts (a 4th generation SD businessman), and the Cultural Heritage Center.
  7. "Grand Ball" - continuing footage from the Capitol Ball and the Centennial Grand Ball, including the Capitol Ball Grand March, and a segment featuring the USS South Dakota silver service on display at the Capitol.
  8. "Grand Ball" - continuing coverage of the Centennial Grand Ball, featuring Governor George S. Mickelson and Senator James Abdnor.
