Biography
Carole Hillard was South Dakota's first female lieutenant governor and served under Governor Bill Janklow from 1995 to 2003. She went on to work as an international consultant for the U.S. Department of State and other organizations, promoting democracy-building projects in developing nations. Hillard also served on the board of directors for the Children's Home Foundation and was active in the Black Hills Children's Home. She died on October 25, 2007 in Lausanne, Switzerland, after complications following a boating accident in the Adriatic Sea on October 8th.
