Scope and Contents

This series contains records regarding the Teachers' Reading Circle, a South Dakota organization comprised of small, local circles and which had the goals of “improvement of members in literary, scientific and professional knowledge and the promotion of habits of self culture” and “encouragement of individual study in definite lines, by use of selected text books and by local circles.” The County Superintendent of Schools acted as manager of the organization and, with a board of elected officials, decided which books would be read from a preselected list including such books as Beer’s Outlines of English Literature, Raub’s School Management, and Tennyson’s Enoch Arden. The board also had the duty of collecting membership fees. Included in this series are book reviews, enrollment blanks and Reading Circle Reports. Records are arranged chronologically.
