This record group contains records created and/or maintained by the South Dakota Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs and includes meeting minutes, correspondence, bank licensing and closing files, consumer complaint files, discrimination complaint case files, professional and occupational licensing board and commission records, securities broker licensing and investigation files, Public Utilities Commission dockets and hearing records, and reports received from various railroad companies operating in South Dakota.

Administrative History
The Division of Consumer Protection was responsible for the prevention of mislabelling and adulteration of food products, petroleum products, paints, and oils; the regulation of weights and measures used in sales transactions; and the inspection of mobile homes. The division's activities include protecting, advising, and assisting consumers in obtaining, using, and/or selling quality products and services with proper regard for accuracy, cleanliness, safety, and conformance with federal standards and laws; assisting consumers by handling complaints and investigating possible false, misleading, or deceptive trade practices; and licensing all peddlers and solicitors in South Dakota.
