Scope and Contents

From the Record Group: This record group contains records created and/or maintained by the South Dakota Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs and includes meeting minutes, correspondence, bank licensing and closing files, consumer complaint files, discrimination complaint case files, professional and occupational licensing board and commission records, securities broker licensing and investigation files, Public Utilities Commission dockets and hearing records, and reports received from various railroad companies operating in South Dakota.

Administrative History

The Division of Human Rights was structured around the Commission on Human Rights and carried out all administrative, personnel, and fiscal operations for the commission, as well as conducting any necessary investigations, conciliations, and research activities. The division was responsible for investigating and alleviating discrimination in employment, labor unions, housing accomodations, property rights, education, public accomodations, and public services due to race, color, ethinic origin, creed, religion, sex, or national origin.
