Scope and Contents

Consists of railroad accident reports and related telegrams and correspondence filed with the Public Utilities Commission (previously the Board of Railroad Commissioners) between 1931 and 1973. Early reports include monthly accident reports for cases not resulting from the operation of trains or engines and irregular reports of incidents occurring from the operation of trains or engines filed pursuant to Section 9689 of the South Dakota Revised Code of 1919. For accidents “occurring in the operation of trains or engines involving loss of life or personal injury,” immediate reporting was required via telegraph or telephone message followed by the submission of a detailed report. Later monthly accident/incident reports were filed by railroad companies pursuant to Federal Railroad Administration regulations (49 C.F.R. 225) and the Federal Railroad Safety Act of 1970 (49 U.S.C. 20109) and document incidents involving occupational illnesses of employees, damage to railroad equipment and structures, and injuries to persons resulting from the operation of the railroad.
