History of the World War II Memorial
Governor William J. Janklow announced in March 2000 the construction of a World War II Memorial on the Capitol grounds to pay tribute to all the past and present South Dakotans who contributed to the war effort both overseas and on the home front.
The memorial consists of six bronze figures representing the branches of service in which South Dakotans served during World War II. They are set on a peninsula constructed into Capitol Lake, facing the Korean and Vietnam War Memorials and the Flaming Fountain.
Dedication ceremonies for the World War II Memorial culminated in three days of events with parades, speeches, dances, and other activities with community-wide civic and religious organizational involvement.
